Ever since the Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in the year 1893, the United States has been known for its intellectual capabilities as much as its military strength. Our nation achieved this reputation by demonstrating a high degree of innovation in STEM fields, mainly in the field of engineering.
However, in recent years the interest in STEM fields is slowly decreasing amongst students(K-12 and college level). To add insult to injury, the average high school senior ranks below their counterpart in 17 other countries in math and science literacy. The United States government has stepped in with plans to increasse interest in STEM fields. Follow this link for a list of their ideas.
The American government is not alone in its pursuit to increase interest in and improve STEM education in students. There are various orginizations with similar goals and agendas. The STEM Coalition is the biggest orginization of this kind. The STEM Education Coalition is an organization striving to support STEM programs for teachers and students at the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies that offer STEM related programs.
This organization is comprised of various associations acting as advocates from thousands of diverse groups, all representing a differnet area of the technological workforce. Ranging from educators, to scientist, to engineers and technicians. All advoacate associations are dedicated to ensuring quality STEM education at all levels and following the STEM Education Coalition guidelines. There is also a good sized list of other STEM organizations on thier site.
